The Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) is an organized research unit created to function as an interdisciplinary research center for faculty and graduate students in computational sciences and engineering, mathematical modeling, applied mathematics, software engineering, and computational visualization. Organizationally, the Director of ICES holds the position of Associate Vice President for Research and reports to the UT President through office of the Vice President for Research. The Institute draws faculty from seventeen participating academic departments and four schools and colleges. ICES faculty hold positions in the Cockrell School of Engineering, the College of Natural Sciences, the Red McCombs School of Business, and the Jackson School of Geological Sciences.
In the 2007-2008 academic year the Institute's research portfolio included 138 active research projects funded through 15 different sources. Among these projects were five with non-profit government laboratories, 21 with commercial entities, and 11 projects with the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. Overall, 82 projects involved faculty from two or more departments (or universities) and 25 projects involved faculty from three or more departments (or universities). Based on this collection of projects an ICES interdisciplinary quotient (sum of departments for all projects/number of projects) was computed to be 2.33.
The Institute is now the home to ten research centers, seven active research groups, and is an Academic Excellence Alliance Partner with the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). The interdisciplinary programs underway at ICES involve 91 faculty representing 17 academic departments and four schools and colleges. ICES faculty hold positions in the Cockrell School of Engineering, the College of Natural Sciences, the Red McCombs School of Business, and the Jackson School of Geological Sciences.
