CAM Admissions

CAM Admissions General Information

The UT Computational and Applied Mathematics Program is highly regarded among the US graduate programs in applied math. The program draws exceptional applicants and the admissions process is competitive. The CAM admissions committee takes a holistic approach in evaluating applications for admissions. Therefore, all aspects of a student’s application are considered and decisions are not based upon one particular component of a complete application.

CAM Admissions Criteria

Students may enter the CAM program with any relevant undergraduate degree major of specialization, such as Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Engineering, or Business. Qualified applicants usually meet or exceed the following criteria:

The above scores are averages, but not minimum requirements for applying. All aspects of an individual’s application are taken into consideration for an overall evaluation.

How To Apply

Deadline

The deadline for admissions to the CAM program is February 1. Students who are admitted and matriculate are expected to begin their studies during that years Fall semester. We do not normally consider students for admission at any other time of the year, nor do we normally allow students to begin the program in the Spring semester, except in special circumstances. To be considered for admission to the CAM program, a student must apply to both CAM and The University of Texas at Austin. The Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) handles applications for all graduate programs at UT-Austin.

Part One: Applying with the CAM Program Office

For application to the CAM program, the following items should be submitted directly to the CAM Graduate Coordinator:

  1. CAM application (PDF Download - this is a fillable PDF with Adobe 7.0 or later)
  2. Statement of purpose.
  3. Copies of transcripts.
  4. The CAM Program requires three letters of recommendation that describe the applicant's accomplishments, intellectual ability, motivation, and potential for academic success in our program. Upon submission of the completed Texas Common Application online (instructions given under Part 2), e-mail messages will be sent to the addresses you provide and your recommenders will be asked to visit a web site where they can complete a questionnaire, including a written assessment. The information submitted online by your recommenders will be made available to the CAM Program immediately, and no separate letters should be mailed to our program office.

A fourth letter of recommendation is suggested for applicants who wish to be considered for a CAM Fellowship. You may download a request for reference form and provide it to your fourth recommender. A fourth request for reference is not allowable by the Texas Common Application online, so a paper form is necessary in this case only.

Part Two: Submitting Materials to GIAC

Apply to The University of Texas at Austin, Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC). The electronic application, called the Texas Common Application, can be found at https://www.applytexas.org.

Please note that the CAM Program is not housed within the Mathematics Department. When completing your online application and selecting your major, Computational and Applied Mathematics is listed as an Intercollegial Program, which is at the bottom of the "selecting your major" drop down menu.

Information about applying to The University of Texas at Austin and electronic application forms are available at http://www.utexas.edu/student/giac. The Electronic application is the preferred method for applying to UT-Austin; however, you can request a paper application by phone at 512-475-7390 or by mail to The Office of Admissions, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712. You will need to specify whether you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident graduate applicant, or international graduate applicant, and you need to state that you are interested in the CAM program. Please allow several weeks for processing and mailing of paper application requests.

In addition to completing the UT application, the following items will need to be sent directly to GIAC:

  1. Complete transcripts, original and official documents, of previous academic work.
  2. GRE scores for the General Test reported from ETS. The GRE Mathematics subject test is not required.
  3. TOEFL scores reported from ETS for international students whose native language is not English.
  4. The address is:
