Arthur Ratzel - ICES Board of Visitors

Arthur Ratzel Arthur (Art) C. Ratzel III is Director of the Facilities Management and Operations Center at Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia). Art has 34+ years experience at Sandia, most of which has been focused on theoretical and experimental work and technical oversight spanning the Engineering Sciences disciplines. In his present assignment, Art has accountability for the Laboratories’ physical infrastructure and managing an annual operating budget in excess of $200M. Art is the Laboratory Policy Lead for Facilities Infrastructure across all of Sandia. He also has accountability for long-term strategic planning to assure sustainability of the Lab’s infrastructure to meet current and evolving national security missions. He completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 1981. Art's work includes applied engineering, as well as research and development efforts supporting a broad spectrum of major Lab initiatives including: design and analysis of innovative solar collection systems, development of computational tools and experimental analysis of hydrogen combustion phenomena (associated with nuclear reactor safety), development of instrumentation and analysis of data from underground nuclear tests, and support of Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) programs in which he had responsibility for developing explosive discrimination systems.
